“And do not make a display of yourselves like the displaying of the ignorance of long ago” [Al-Ahzab, 33:33]..

β€œ…and not to show off their adornment…” [al-Noor 24:31]

It says in Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah (17/109) ‘Wearing black for women is not a must. They may wear other colours that are worn only by women, do not attract attention and do not provoke desire. Many women choose to wear black, not because it is obligatory, but because it is farthest removed from being an adornment’

Abu Dawud (565) narrated from Abu Hurairah (May Allah Be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: β€œDo not prevent the female slaves of Allah from attending the mosques of Allah, but let them go out unadorned.”(Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 515)

Imam Ath-Thahabi (May Allah have mercy upon him) says in his book Kitab Al-Kaba’ir (The Book of Major Sins): β€œAmongst the deeds which a woman is cursed for are; displaying the adornments she wears, wearing perfume when she goes out, and wearing colourful clothes…”

There are reports which indicate that the women of the Sahaabah used to wear black. Abu Dawood (4101) narrated that Umm Salamah said: β€œWhen the words β€˜and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms)’ [al-Noor 24:31 – interpretation of the meaning] were revealed, the women of the Ansaar went out looking as if there were crows on their heads because of their garments.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.

White is a colour recommended (mustahabb) for the living to wear and for the dead to be shrouded in, as was stated in the hadeeth narrated by Ibn β€˜Abbaas, who said: β€œThe Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: β€˜Wear your white clothes, for they are the best of your clothes, and shroud your dead in them.” (Reported by Abu Dawood and al-Tirmidhi; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Ahkaam al-Janaa’iz (p. 82))

So what are the conditions of the hijab (covering) for the Muslim woman?

Shaykh al-Albaani (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

Regarding the conditions of hijab are firstly, it should cover all of the body, apart from whatever has been exempted.

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e. screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allaah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful”

[Al-Ahzab (chapter 33) ayat (verse) 59]

This ayat clearly states that it is obligatory to cover all of a woman’s beauty and adornments and not to display any part of that before non-mahram men (strangers) except for whatever appears unintentionally, in which case there will be no sin on them if they hasten to cover it up.
